If you would like to send a present, just ask for each board member's name and home address and I will do my best to get them for you. But you'd better hurry though, because they're going off the board, moving out of state, and settling into new homes and jobs very soon. <div><br></div><div>For the intrepid President, Valerie, I am getting "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich," a warm winter coat, and those chocolate covered macadamia nuts she likes so much. Jim, the real estate agent who no longer lives at the Village Woods, is getting a walker. But just as a joke because he's finally retiring after so many years of service to the board and the people who live and own at the Village Woods. </div><div><br></div><div>He's also getting a copy of the California Real Estate Association's Ethics Manual. Finally, for the third member -- and the second Val, I'm getting a gift card for the Rite Aid pharmacy. Lord knows how expensive medications are not to mention psychotropics.</div><div><br></div><div>Everyone is getting carryon luggage, too because -- can you imagine? --they're all moving 1,000 (or more) miles from San Diego. I guess I should get something for Hugo, our previous Community Manager, too. Such a sad thing, losing your job like that -- and his company losing the Village Woods contract. </div><div><br></div><div>Well, when the law gets unvolved, there's really no other way. I guess we could take up a collection for his family; it looks like he's going away for a long time. </div><div><br></div><div>Well the good news for me is that I got a rather large settlement and it was more than enough to fix all the damage done to my unit. We're still selling, though; we were offered so much to sell and a long vacation is in the works so stay tuned for postcards. </div><div><br></div><div>I'll get you my new address just as soon as we close escrow on the new place. And don't forget to email me for everyone's address. </div><div><br></div><div>Or I guess I could just leave them here in the comments. <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">But that's up to Vallerie, Jim, Val and Hugo. Isn't it?</span></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17162681872562963839noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4397799451437512270.post-17608733244256603402015-05-18T09:54:00.001-07:002015-05-18T09:54:08.932-07:00Credit where credit is due<div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">I must say that and NN Jaechke did a good job this weekend. It's not much, when your association decides to charge you to replace keys that don't work, but it is the first step. That step includes lawyers and, of course, blogging. I'm considering outing all of the idiots/assholes involved.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
These include members of the board of the Village Woods Owners' Association, the Community Manager and her assistant. If the CM is intellectually challenged, the ACM is a charity case. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The only people who are more stupid than these two are the four people who will soon be a party to the funniest lawsuit you ever saw. </div>

I also had to state "why would I lie?" about my keys not working. Best of all is a toss up between a) having to appear before the condo association board for them to waive the key replacement fee; and b) the fact that the replacement keys were the only thing not in the envelope that NN Jaeschke's employee of the month sent. I do this thing when I call the management company my condo association has chosen to manage the property. It has to do with me emailing the Community Manager, getting the runaround, calling her supervisor, and the supervisor being reasonable. My Community Manager's supervisor says she doesn't know why two board meetings in a row have been canceled and understands my concerns.<br />
<br />
My concerns are these: <br />
<ol>
<li>There is a whole on the balcony above my condo</li>
<li>There is water damage all up in there and probably my wall</li>
<li>The Association has promised to replace balconies but...</li>
<li>Only balconies at or near Association board member condos have been replaced</li>
<li>They are going to vote on whether to replace the balcony above mine -- whenever they have a meeting next</li>
<li>I cannot get my condo appraised, rented, sold until these folks act</li>
</ol>
Act already! Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17162681872562963839noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4397799451437512270.post-71491442313943435422015-03-02T17:40:00.000-08:002015-03-02T17:40:26.428-08:00The Source of the Flood<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Xb2XKg4gq2s/VPUMQwb9i3I/AAAAAAAADeI/7MMUGhd_2Is/s1600/IMG_2494%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Xb2XKg4gq2s/VPUMQwb9i3I/AAAAAAAADeI/7MMUGhd_2Is/s1600/IMG_2494%5B1%5D.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is water leaking into my condo from the common area.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So I revived the Village Woods Fun Party because people from N.N. Jaeschke, Inc. have gotten right under my skin, These people, heretofore as yet unnamed, have two days to fix a problem that:<br />
<ul>
<li>Was not of my doing</li>
<li>Is to do with water entering my condo from the common area</li>
<li>They (N.N. Jaeschke, Inc.) have denied </li>
<li>Has become worse since the rains began</li>
<li>And it is, for sure, a GAPING HOLE IN THE STUCCO on the patio above my sliding glass door -- as you can see in the photo above</li>
</ul>
As you can see, in the above photo, there is a hole in the balcony above my condo -- right where the water has been coming in. This hole is about eight inches long and 1-2 inches high. That's a lot of water, people. Why isn't someone fixing this?<br />
<br />
Actually, why did I have to discover it? <br />
<br />
Because N.N. Jaeschke, Inc. -- or at least the people I have come in contact with -- have a way of dealing with problems: Deny them; grudgingly accept responsibility after I do all the legwork and provide proof; delay, delay, delay; continue to deny; mis-communicate; etc. I have dealt with an Assistant Community Manager, a Community Manager, and a Manager Supervisor at N.N. Jaeschke, Inc. and, all I can say is -- I want to complain long and loud -- to:<br />
<ul>
<li>The Board of Directors</li>
<li>Someone -- anyone -- at the management company (N.N. Jaeschke, Inc.) </li>
<li>The California Association of Community Managers</li>
<li>The State of California</li>
<li>Obtain assistance from the Social Media Hive Mind </li>
</ul>
If anyone wants to help me in this, I am looking help. Legal, professional, governmental, regulatory, you name it. End of rant. Thank you.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17162681872562963839noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4397799451437512270.post-82842437656163337222015-02-21T13:39:00.000-08:002015-02-21T13:39:26.426-08:00I Hate NN Jaeschke and You Should Too<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I #hatennjaechke for not fixing this flood.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
What is social media if not the worst parts of Junior High, neighbors and Facism? Shit! We might as well be talking about my fucking stupid Condo Association -- and the stupid fucking management company they hired to "manage" the property - NN Jaeschke, Inc.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I would like to use social media to get all my friends to hate them. Hate <a href="http://www.associaonline.com/sites/nn-jaeschke-inc/Pages/San-Diego-Property-Management.aspx" target="_blank">NN Jaeschke</a>. Or, if you're going to do the Social Media thing: #hatennjaechke. Why hate? Because...<br />
<br />
At my Condo Association, this is the way they "solve" problems<br />
<ol>
<li>Deny responsibility</li>
<li>Grudgingly accept proof of responsibility</li>
<li>Disclaim responsibility going forward</li>
<li>End communications after project finishes but before satisfaction is reached</li>
</ol>
Your example can be the four floods I had in my own condominium (two of which could have been prevented with fast action by my management company, NN Jaeschke). But Noooooo! They were too busy denying, grudging, disclaiming and not communicating to solve our first flood when the second one happened -- in the same place for the same reason! It's no wonder I hate NN Jaeschke or, on Social Media, I #hatennjaeschke.<br />
<br />
People who are not beholden to condominium associations don't have a clue as to the personal hell it can be if you get a bad board member or a bad person at your association's management company. At NN Jaeschke, two of the three people I've conversed with (or 66%!) are DGDEs. Degedes are the worst kind of people thrust into the perfect jobs for the type: they <b>seem</b> to save money for their company and, by extension, the associations they manage.<br />
<br />
But if you believed that, you would be dumber than 66% of the people I have encountered at NN Jaeschke. Degedes cause more trouble because they don't accept that there is a problem. And they do this so roundly and so completely that many other problems sprout from the one they're DGDE-ing all over.<br />
<br />
For those of you who don't have a condominium (or if you're part of the problem over at NN Jaeschke), let me explain. Condominiums are owned both individually and in common by the owners who make up the membership of a nonprofit organization set up to manage them. For example, I own and am responsible for everything in my condominium from the paint out and the association is responsible for the drywall in; the framing, plumbing, etc. The association should also take care of more easily-definable common areas like pools, walkways, trash containers, etc. and we pay collectively into a fund that is used to (never properly) manage the complex.<br />
<br />
Setting aside the above recipe for fraud to focus, instead, on the kinds of people who let fraud occur, think about this: Because it would be cumbersome (even in the digital age) to have every member weigh in on every concern, associations elect board members, from within the owner-membership, to make decisions for the whole. This might not always have been a problem, but now, the kinds of people who end up on boards fall into one of four categories: 1. people who genuinely care but whose voices cannot be heard among the cacophony of the other types; 2. people who have a particular ax to grind; 3. people who are power mad or otherwise unbalanced; 3. real estate agents, who are usually multiple-condo owners; and 4. investors who don't live in the complex but own one or more of the units. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Add to this the person who usually runs the meeting, the management company shill, and the way the numbers work out is this: investors, real estate agents, and ax-grinders (who are in the majority) do not have the best interests of the association or its membership in mind when voting or making policy. This means power mad people and people who want what's really good for the community (and who often get mistaken for each other) are in the minority. The association manager, whom I call the company management shill, only wants what's in the best interest of the management company -- and that is rarely, if ever, in line with what's actually good for anyone.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The final piece in the Condominium Association puzzle is this: no single person, whether condo owner, renter or government regulator, can cobble together even one tenth of one percent of one fuck to give about any of it. So horrible things get done for no good reason, megalomaniacs gain control of boards, regular owners steer clear, and asshole companies like NN Jaeschke can shit all over people in the name of profits.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Government regulators, the ones who regulate nonprofis (allegedly public benefit) organizations, do not want to hear a single word from a single person involved in a condominium association, and for good reason: you'd have to be bat-shit-monkey-nuts crazy to ever be involved in one so you get what you deserve.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Only problem is, what happens when there's a problem that needs quick, decisive action by a person empowered to do good for the human beings who call a condominium (and its association) home? The answer is FUCK ALL and that is because idiotic activist board members have allowed companies like NN Jaeschke -- and the socially-impaired people who work there - to take advantage of the good people of condominium associations, the smartest of whom threw up their hands long ago. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The answer for people who do not have access to legal representation is to live with floods, shit, power-outages, water shut-offs and rules so ridiculous and arcane that the Nazis would laugh at them. Or start a blog and shit invective about the imbalance of power at condominium associations until someone listens. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
If you're listening, I ask you to please put NN Jaeschke, the minions who work for them, and the people who put them in power, up for ridicule! To do this, please comment on this post, write about your own circumstances, re-post the ones you read, and use the hashtag: #hatennjaechke until the people in power realize that it actually pays NOT to be assholes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Thank you.</div>

My Grandfather was an electrician at the Chicago Opera in the 30s. He died in 1976 and my Aunt took his house in Pacific Beach. In the garage, she found, and cannot use, a chair from the Chicago Opera with the year 1929 stenciled on it. So the chair, with the statute of limitations firmly past, passed on to me. Here are some photos for your viewing pleasure.<br />
<br />
Oh, and I'll sell it to the right person for the right price. Thanks!<br />

Previous writing credits include Fugue State in the 2010 Philadelphia Fringe Festival and The Whispering Ruckus in the West Chester One Act Play Festival. Salvador Dali once said that any artist who is truly serious about creating good art should first marry my wife. Nate didn’t marry Dali’s wife, but he married Haley who is the most beautiful, supportive and patient woman in the world. Much thanks to Kevin, Jennie and Lizzie for this opportunity and much love to Echo and Makhai, the two most adorable pit bulls ever.<br />

<br />
But! The fact that people I know and like are moving into a Village Woods condo is good news indeed. I didn't even tell them how crazy the board and president are. I did tell them which condos to avoid and how to not act like they're having any fun in the pool, which is right next to the President's condo.<br />
<br />
GOD! Why can't people be happy! Like my with my new neighbors.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17162681872562963839noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4397799451437512270.post-72266441681428575632012-11-07T12:00:00.000-08:002012-11-07T12:00:00.136-08:00Why I like this hat<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1.cpcache.com/product/711651387/one_billion_rising_cap.jpg?color=White&height=150&width=150" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1.cpcache.com/product/711651387/one_billion_rising_cap.jpg?color=White&height=150&width=150" /></a></div>
I like this hat. It looks good one me, it has a cool graphic and nice colors. I also connects me with 1 billion like-minded people and, while I like to stand out in the crowd, we need to stand together on some things.<br />
<br />
Like violence against women. Do you know anyone who's for that? What about rape? Anyone for that? No? Then stand with me.<br />
<br />
On Feb. 14, 2013 I am joining One Billion Rising -- a global uprising to bring to light something that is not fun to talk about but that every person in the world would say he/she is against. And you don't even have to get the hat.<br />

So a group of friends met me at Skate World in Linda Vista. The event? Roller Disco (or #RollerDisco as we call it in the age of Twit). The reason? To have fun.<br />
<br />
And have fun we (for the most part) did. There were some bruised knees, my bottom hurt for a few days and one lucky unfortunate twisted a knee exiting the hard wood rink floor. Good news? The carpet landing was at least a little softer.<br />

When you produce a play about teaching artists trying to make sense of arts and education, set in a school, and performed at a community college – with student actors yet – you’re asking a lot of an audience. This much was asked of me last night and, after my disclaimer that I am married to a member of the cast, I must say Mesa College and InnerMission Productions’ “No Child…” It’s worth the drive to Kearney Mesa.<br />
<br />
The play itself is short – less than an hour – but every second of it brings something new, touching and uplifting. The story is real and often acted solo by the author, by Nilaja Sun. Some day, I’d like to see her do this because the rapid-fire exchange of dialogue is an amazing feat and this cast of 16 was working overtime as it was.<br />
<br />
The play is narrated by Janitor Barron, in an extremely human and wizened portrayal by Rhys Green. Barron paints the picture of a school and a class full of kids who have already been left behind when the national No Child Left Behind brings its show to Brooklyn. Ms. Sun has been hired, through a department of education grant, to teach the worst of the worst kids a play. Lynae DePriest pretty much lives the pain, and pathos of this poor artist with an impossible task, and manages to instill hope. Another stand out in the cast is Justine Hince as the overwhelmed and finally consumed Ms. Tam. Watching her go from hopeful to disenchanted, to giving up is worth the price of admission.<br />
<br />
It is at this point that a reviewer would explain that this production was an educational collaboration with actual students playing the actual students and professionals playing the adults in a way to soften the blow that the kids were blown away by the pros. But not so. These kids are possessed of so much energy, talent and emotion (and so much control over them all) that it is hard to understand that they are just beginning their careers as actors. The ensemble as a whole is even, competent and surefooted.<br />
<br />
Standouts among the kids are Brandon Kelly as the angry young Jerome, Bianca Ostojich whose Shondrika can kill with a look, and Rebekah Ensley whose Cocoa puts hope into a much-too-common end to her high school studies.<br />
<br />
The production team is also a combination of students and professionals and by-and-large they pull it off with nary a hitch. Directors Carla Nell and Kym Pappas have managed to create a strong, powerful cast that is surprisingly even, even as the emotions trickle, flow and sometimes gush. The only thing wanting is more sound design. There was too little musical accompaniment to follow up an excellent opening.<br />
<br />
So what, you will think, wiping away tears, as the lights fade on an excellently-wrought “No Child…” After all, as Janitor Barron says, “sometimes the most talented ones just slip through the cracks.” All in all Mesa and InnerMission created an excellent production with an excellent use of student and professional actors, staff and technicians – and an excellent way to spend an evening. Just give yourself time to find the college, the parking lot and the theatre – <a href="http://youtu.be/0pHdRWwRU2o" target="_blank">watch this video for information on where to park</a>.<br />

There's a great play,<a href="http://innermissionproductions.org/currentprod.shtml" target="_blank">No Child...</a> there in May and I want to see it. So I went there. The drugs are winning. The war on terrorism is difficult to win because it's also war on a concept more than an enemy. No what people need to instigate, manage and finally win a war is a real enemy. <br />
<br />
Like my friend who had a war against the cable company. He thought it was OK to take cable from a company too lazy to protect its flow. When the cable company terminated the signal at the wires above his house, instead of right where he could tap in at the junction box, I asked him if the war was over. His reply, "It's no longer war. It's Jihad."<br />
<br />
This was the 90s when Jihad simply meant living your life only to destroy your enemy. We have come to learn that the enemy of the Jihadists is the Infidel (us) and that we started it with the Crusades.<br />
<br />
The term Holy War is possibly the funniest thing in human history. The idea that somehow the being charged with loving the world so much that He created it for us would stand for us killing people who don't believe in Him is ludicrous on so many levels... <br />
<br />
War is not holy. No, war is personal. It began with tribes and it continues with tribes to this day. Or have you never lived in a mixed-use condominium complex? The idea about condos used to be to allow people who cannot afford to own a whole house or apartment building to own just one little bit. It was a way for these people to live together and own part of the building and share ownership of the common area. But now it's just a place for people to start and lose wars.<br />
<br />
In my opinion, there is no winner in any war.<br />
<br />
There are many reasons for Condos becoming war zones but my main pet peeve is people who used to believe in the condo model but who move out and rent to complete fucking morons. People who are in the mindset of an apartment and not a shared experience, people who don't care as much as owners.<br />
<br />
My complex had flipped. Most of the units near me are owned by investors. Some of them are good about the people they rent to and others are keeping oddball family members there. <a href="http://jennieosix.blogspot.com/2012/03/dark-at-top-of-stairs.html" target="_blank">Read my wife's blog on it. </a><br />
<br />
The problem is that we have an enemy. One who doesn't believe in the idea of community property, personal space, hygiene... But we're against war.<br />
<br />
Part of me wants to go all Jihad but it takes too much time i.e. the rest of my life. Like the Gerard Depardieu character in Green Card, part of me wants to tattoo the name of my upstairs neighbor on my forearm as a reminder that I need to kill that person and, once it's done, to have the tattoo artists draw a line through it...<br />
<br />
The problem with that, besides how messy killing is, is that you have to live with it. Right there on your arm and in your heart. All war, holy or otherwise, just never goes away.<br />
<br />
How to get a person to believe or leave, then? We've tried talking, note-leaving, appealing to the landlords and now we're appealing to the authorities and, possibly the legal system. And just that's going to leave a mark. Imagine the mark a war will leave.<br />
<br />
All I want is what's best for everyone involved. For my wife and me to be able to sleep at night without hearing a whining, barking dog begging to be let out; for that dog to be owned by loving people who walk it and dote on it; for my upstairs neighbor to become a loving, intelligent member of society who is aware of the needs of other people.<br />
<br />
I don't think war is going to solve this problem.<br />
<br />
I guess I am ready for a miracle.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17162681872562963839noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4397799451437512270.post-54958472727726658712012-03-23T17:19:00.001-07:002012-03-23T17:19:00.030-07:00The Doushey Basket (#dousheybasket)<a class="asset-img-link" href="http://yotamak.blogs.com/.a/6a00d8341c145e53ef0163032f98d0970d-popup" style="float: left;"><img alt="Doushey basket" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c145e53ef0163032f98d0970d" src="http://yotamak.blogs.com/.a/6a00d8341c145e53ef0163032f98d0970d-120wi" style="margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px;" title="Doushey basket" /></a><br />
The hashtag #dousheybasket can be used to refer to anything you pay too much for, especially if you pay too much for it in order to look better to the people who shop at the Little Italy Farmer's Market.<br />
<br />
Besides, no matter how hard you try my wife and I are the doushey-est people there.<br />
<br />
It all started on a normal Saturday afternoon at the La Jolla Farmer's Market -- oddly the second doushy-est farmer's market in the county. Jennie wanted one of the robo-baskets that a nice European-looking woman was selling. We asked the price. $40.<br />
<br />
After her pitch (it was made in Germany with strong materials and Eurpoean design touches and better engineering), we thought it was worth the price. Especially because it would complete our doushey traveling-to-farmer's-markets-ensemble: a Smart Car.<br />
<br />
This became apparent when we went to the Little Italy Farmer's Market in the Smarty (only we can call it Smarty; because you don't own one, you have to call it The Smart Car). We tooled past all the Range Rovers, Fiats and Priuses; we popped into an impossibly small parking spot and -- the piece de resistance?<br />
<br />
We opened the back window (you can do that with the touch of a button in a Smarty) and pulled out the $40 basket. We knew it was cool because people didn't look at us until after we'd passed. It was such a pleasure paying extra for things and putting them in out too-small, over-heavy and exorbitantly expensive Doushey Basket. How do we know we paid too much for it?<br />
<br />
The only thing we do that hipsters don't do, apparently, is shop at Safeway, where we saw the very same basket for $9.<br />
<br />
It's still worth it, though.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17162681872562963839noreply@blogger.com0
